Angela Svoljšak moves between two worlds: she works in medicine, but her free time is devoted to music. After many years of choir singing, she attended an audition out of sheer curiosity, and became a protege of Professor Marjan Trček. Their hard work and artistic efforts were justly rewarded: she received fi rst prize and gold medal at the Music Competition for Youth Musicians of Slovenia in 2004 and 2006. In recent time, Angela Svoljšak has been exploring the undiscovered capabilities of her voice and musical expression under Professor Mateja Arnež Volčanšek.

3.7. 20:30 Festival Hall: The professors
MAGIC - MUSIC - COMEDY

The Professors is the latest show by the fabulous comedy duo GodArt (Jure Godler and Tilen Artač). The show is a celebration of both actors’ creativity and multiple talents. In about 90 minutes, the show deftly blends the history of musicwith the personal surrealistic views of both artists, sharp, thoughtful humour and powerful state-of-the-art illusions that are an inherent part of the story. The show includes performances of classical works, though at the end the »Professors« join not only their powers but also the classical and the pop-modern style.
Performers: GodArt
Directed by: Nathaniel Doppelzimmer
Authors: Jure Godler and Tilen Artač

4.7. 20:30 Festival Hall: Čefurji raus (monodrama)

The comedy Čefurji Raus!, based on the much discussed Goran Vojnovi}’s novel, is famed by the now and very much »in«
slang used by "čefurs", people who moved to Slovenia from former Yugoslavia’s republics. The ~efur-speak is a strange
combination of Slovene, various languages spoken in the former Yugoslavia, and street slang. At the focus of the comedy is a narrator who gives a humorous account of the events and at the same time acts as a critic of the current situation; his razor-sharp
refl ections portray the life of the minority, pointing to the overlaps and gaps between the Slovene majority and the minority,
čefurji. The stage empty, ^efurji Raus! renounces any theatrical tools, props and effects, building its expressive power on the powerof words and the narrative technique of the lead actor.
Author of the novel: Goran Vojnović
Directed and written by: Marko Bulc
Actor: Aleksandar Rajaković - Sale
Music (intro/outro): Zlatan Čordić - Zlatko
Executive producer: Dejmo stisnt teater

5.7. 20: 30 Vila Bled: Slovene composers´ night

DSS Chamber Orchestra of Soloists
Conductor: Jürgen Bruns
Concertmaster: Gregor Traven
Soloists: Mojca Zlobko Vajgl, harp
An|elko Krpan, violin
Wolfgang Panhofer, Violoncello

The Soloists Chamber Orchestra of the Slovene Composers Society (KOS DSS) was founded in 2004 on the initiative of professor and composer Marko Mihevc who is also the artistic director of the orchestra. The orchestra was founded with the purpose to present fi rst performances of new chamber and orchestral works written by Slovene composers. The orchestra had its first public appearance at the European Night of Slovene Composers 30th April 2004 where they premiered six novelties of Slovene composers. Since then the ensemble has performed with conductors like Marko Hribernik, Marko Munih, Anton Nanut, David de Villier, Marko Vatovec, Gianluce Marcian, Nenad Firšt, Michele Trenti and Jürgen Bruns who also became chief conductor of the orchestra. Under the guidance of Bruns the orchestra became most successful. One of the highlights was a guest tour through Germany with the final concert at the Konzerthaus in Berlin. The orchestra consists of most eminent and acknowledged musicians
who are dedicated to contemporary music and thus often inspire the creation of new compositions.
Jürgen Bruns studied violin at the "Hanns Eisler” Academy of Music Berlin between 1983 and 1988 and became a member
of the Berliner Sinfonie-Orchester (Berlin Symphonic Orchestra) while still a student. In addition to his conducting studies at
the "Hanns Eisler” Academy of Music Berlin with Rolf Reuter. Jürgen Bruns took lessons from G. Varga in Florence and C.
Bruck in Paris. Further studies led him to the "Pierre Monteux School” in Maine (USA). During his studies he became chief
conductor at the Berlin Comic Opera. In order to devote his time more intensely to conducting, he gave up his position as
violinist at the Berlin Symphony Orchestra and during the following years attended several international masterclasses and
conductor competitions where he gained various prizes. Invitations from different orchestras and opera houses followed
which enabled him an active conducting career in Germany and other European countries. Jürgen Bruns is regularly guest at
international festivals like the Festival International de Musique Sion, the Kurt- Weill-Fest in Dessau, the Dresdner
Musikfestspiele or the Ravello Festival. As music director he collaborates with acknowledged theater directors like Peter
Zadek, the Director of the German Theatre Berlin, with whom he worked together in many performances, the latest of which
was Zadek’s production of Brecht’s »Mother Courage« which is currently on the agenda of the German Theatre in Berlin.
For years now, an essential part of Jürgen Bruns’ artistic activities has consisted of reviving the rich music tradition of prewar
Berlin. This fascinating, multi-faceted music scene gave important impulses up to today and included many composers of
Jewish descent like Franz Schreker, Ernst Toch, Karol Rathaus, Berthold Goldschmidt and Kurt Weill – all of them outlawed and
forced into exile by Nazi Germany. In 1991 Jürgen Bruns founded the Kammersymphonie Berlin and has remained its artistic director until today. Together with the Kammersymphonie Berlin he focused on contemporary classical music and works of composers ostracized by Nazi Germany. For their work, conductor and orchestra received the Siemens-Förderpreis by the
prestigious Siemens Music Foundation which is awarded by the Rheinberg Music Academy and the German Federal State of
Brandenburg. Together with the Kammersymphonie Berlin and other orchestras, Jürgen Bruns produced various CDs (e.g. with EDA, Signum, Quadriga, Lynor, Sony, Capriccio, Deutsche Grammophon) as well as film and radio recordings. Many of the works,
foremost the "ostracized music” by composers like Goldschmidt, Rathaus, Schreker and others, were recorded for the first time ever. His conceptional concert programming where he combines classical music with other genres of art, quite often challenges established forms in traditional state theatre and concert business. Thus he succeeded in opening up doors to new audiences.
Mojca Zlobko Vajgl – harpist and professor at the Ljubljana Academy of Music of the University in Ljubljana – has already for many years been one of the most important Slovenian musicians in Slovenia. During her rich solistic carreer she has given many impressive performances in Europe and Canada. The audience at home knows her through numerous solistic concerts and performances which she had together with the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra or the RTV Slovenia Symphonic Orchestra. In 1991 she graduated at the Ljubljana Academy of Music. After her first employment as solo harpist of the Slovenian National Opera and Ballet Orchestra in Ljubljana she mainly focused on solo and chamber music. She completed her postgraduate studies at the Hochschule für Musik in Hamburg. As soloist she performed with renowned ensembles like the Berlin and Vienna Symphony
(Wiener Concert Verein), the Stockholm Chamber Orchestra, the Ars Amata Zürich, Orchestras from Padova and Veneto, the
Croatian Chamber Orchestra from Zagreb, and philharmonic orchestras from Kiev, Belgrade and Sarajevo. Very inspiring was
her cooperation with the fi rst fl utist of the Vienna Philharmonic Dieter Flury (with whom she recorded a CD for the Japanese
label Camerata Tokyo), the mezzosopranist Bernarda Fink, the violonist Miran Kolbl, the Latvian fl utist Ilze Urban, the famous
Leipzig String Quartet and many other national and international soloists and ensembles. Many music critics describe Mojca Zlobko Vajgl as an artist of extraordinary musicality with a vast spectre of shades, characterized by a perfect and refined technique, expressive articulation, a continuous search for adaquate elements of conceptual illustrations, and an always present absorption and transparency in the forming of compositions. Primož Ramovš, Ivo Petrič, Uroš Krek, Jani Golob, Aleš Strajnar and Milko Lazar – are only a few names of Slovenian composers who dedicated their works for the harp to this exeptional harpist. There are seven CDs which she has recorded until today.
The violinist Anđelko Krpan was born in Zagreb. After his diploma at the Academy of Music in his home town he continued
his studies at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna and became »Magister artium« in 1996. He improved his knowledge on
masterclasses of Prof. Yfrah Neaman (London), Prof. Igor Ozim (Velenje) and Prof. Albert Lysy (Switzerland). Already
during his studies he was awarded ten first prizes of different competitions at home and abroad. His diploma concert was
awarded with the HGZ award (best diploma concert of the year 1989). As best young Croatian musician he was honoured with
the Ivo Vuljevič Award in 1993. Anđelko Krpan performs as soloist together with numerous renowned orchestras in his home country and abroad. He is a member of the string quartet SEBASTIAN and works as assistant professor at the Academy of Music in Zagreb. Since 2002 he is also concert master of the Croatian National Theatre Orchestra in Zagreb.
Born in Vienna, Wolfgang Panhofer studied at the Vienna University of Music and at the Royal Northern College of Music in the UK (Prof. Kerschbaum). He had masterclasses with Boris Pergamenschikow, Steven Isserlis, Paul Tortelier, William Pleeth, and Andras Schiff. Wolfgang Panhofer received numerous awards, among others also the Sir John Barbirolli Award. As chamber musician and soloist he concerted together with different orchestras throughout Europe, Asia and the USA. Under the guidance of
renowned conductors, he played together with the Vienna Symphony, the Hamburg Symphony, the Baltic Philharmonic, the
BBC Symphony Orchestra and many others. He has produced many CDs and was recorded on radio and television.
Wolfgang Panhofer is an honoured guest of many festivals and teaches masterclasses all over Europe, Asia and the USA. Vienna reviews describe him as »second Rostropovich« and an absolutely brilliant musician.

13.7. 17:00 Vila Prešeren ZLATKO KAUČIČ KOMBO

The Kombo ensemble started out seven years ago under the auspices of the Association of Cultural Societies Nova Gorica and is currently part of the Zvočni izviri (Sound Springs) Society. Priority is given to contemporary music production and free artistic creation pushing above and beyond any clichés. Under Zlatko Kaučič, the Kombo ensemble joins and trains young drummers, percussionists, bassists, guitarists, and keyboard players. If the music played by Kombo was to be classifi ed, it would be probably be categorized as jazz and ethno, with occasional music insights from the traditional Slovenian repertoire. The music thus created is creative and original, oriented towards creative multidisciplinarity, the ability to master all the tongues of music, and towards
establishing links with other forms of art, including, but not limited to, literature.

13.7. 20.30 Belvedere: MATEVŽ SMERKOL KVARTET with Nina Rotner

The quarter is composed of some of the leading jazz musicians of their generation who have performed extensively throughout the world: Matevž Smerkol – doublebass, leader and arranger, Lenart Krečič – tenor saxophone – New York, Marcus Weller – piano – Graz, Marko Juvan – drums. The quartet features a talented, charming young singer Nina Rotner, who deserves to be classified as a serious jazz singer, not only interested in the fashion trends and pop music but rather devoted to identifying the message and identity of jazz pieces and interpreting them in the light of the present reality.+ The quartet are known for their novel interpretations of fundamental jazz standards and for jazz adaptations of Slovenian folk songs. Their music is based
on inventive jazz rhythms and modern harmonic transformations.

14.7. 20:30 Belvedere: REMAKE SWING KVARTET with Barbara Čokl

THE REMAKE SWING QUARTET, featuring Marjan Loborec on drums, Klemen Krajc on double bass, guitarist and signer Aleš Strajnar and Jernej Podboj on clarinet and saxophone, was formed in 2007. The members of the quartet were brought together by a wish to remake and play the swing, that is the music of George Gershwin, Walter Donaldson, Martin Dennis, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and their 1930s-1950s contemporaries. Through the music they play, the members of the quartet return to the songs that were the main (yet not the only) driver and source of inspiration at the beginning of their musical career.
The musicians make their own remakesusing the patterns and methods typical of the style. Despite their short career to date, the
Remake Swing Quartet have performed at several jazz music evenings and played as guests at various exhibition openings.
In over 40 years of music career, Marjan Loborec has played virtually all kings of popular music, but his main interest has
always been jazz. He played in several ensembles in Slovenia and abroad, most recently with Greentown Jazz Band, and then started his own group which performed extensively and made four CDs. In the CDs and concerts he plays with his band and guests, renowned Slovenian jazz musicians, the experience of his generation blends in with the freshness of younger jazz musicians, tempting the listener to dive into a nostalgic remake of mainstream jazz, the classic jazz playing of the 1950s and 1960s.
The youngest member of the quarter, double-bassist and bass guitarist Klemen Krajc, graduated from music school in double-bass and bass guitar and has been studying double-bass with Professor Uli Langthaler at the Conservatory in Graz (study course: jazz) since 2004. He of selected songs, striving to capture the musical expression typical of swing and has attended a number of workshops in Slovenia and abroad and has played and recorded with many Slovenian and foreign musicians (Blaž Jurjevčič, Peter Mihelič, Dominik Kranjčan, Lenart Krečič, Primož Grašič, Drago Gajo, Marjan Loborec, Howard Curtis, Miles Griffi th, etc.) and
orchestras (Duwai Orchestra, Prava stvar, Big Band RTV and the Big Band of Slovenian Army).
Aleš Strajnar earned his music education in Ljubljana, at the Music High School (departments of Musical Theory and
Guitar) and at the Academy of Music (Composition). He composes, plays guitar (jazz) and teaches Solfeggio and Jazz Guitar at the Conservatorium Ljubljana. He is a member of the Society of Slovene Composers, with his works including musical pieces for soloist guitar and guitar duo as well as chamber music works for a variety of ensembles and orchestras. He also composes popular and jazz music.
After completing lower music school for clarinet and graduating from gymnasium, Luka Podboj went on to study medicine. As a student, he played the clarinet and, mainly, saxophone, in a number of small and large ensembles (e.g., Stompers, Albatros, Akademy Jazz Orchestra) and was for many years a member of Mladi Levi (Young Lions). In the early 1980s
he gave up his music career to work as a specialist otorhinolaryngologist. After retiring in 2007, Jernej Podboj returned
to music and currently plays not only in the Remake Swing Quartet but also in the Wind Orchestra Godba Ljubljanskih Veteranov.

Sandor & Adam Javorkai with friends

Sandor Javorkai (violin)
Adam Javorkai (chello)
Gyula Banga (cimbalom)
Rezso Olah (viola)
Ferenc Jaroka (kontrabass)
The main source of the foundation of the Jávorkai Group is the wish of the Jávorkai brothers to cross the narrow borders of classical music for creating an individual world of sounds which refl ects on personal experiences and impressions. On a solid fundament of classical music the construct an exciting building, consisting of bricks of jazz rhythms and ethnic melodies from the
entire Carpathian basin, which spread from traditional Hungarian and Gipsy music to Jewish folk. This components shouldn´t
only keep their own individual values but also mutually strengthen each other. It isn´t accidental that one of the main focuses of
the Group are elaborations of works by the great Hungarian composers Béla Bartók und Zoltán Kodály - their efforts to join
classical and folk musik have delivered one of the main ideas for the Group´s establishment.
