The Northwest
Children’s Choir was founded in 1992 by Rudolf de Beer, currently the conductor
of the University Choir of Stellenbosch in the Western Cape Province of South
Africa.
In 1998 he was
replaced by Professor Awie van Wyk and his daughter, Mabet.
In 2002 and 2003
Bernard Kruger took over as conductor and in 2004 Stern Bezuidenhout. He is
assisted by Rachelle Wessels as accompanist.
The choir
currently consists of 52 members between the ages of 8 – 15 years and all
residing in the Northwest Province of South-Africa.
With various
international and national tours behind them, the choir has already obtained
worldwide recognition. In 1997 the choir participated as the only
representatives of South Africa
at the fourteenth Childrens- and Youth Choir Festival in Oslo, Norway.
In 2000 and 2004
the choir was invited to the Universal Children’s Choral Festival in Texas, United
States of America.
In 2005 the
Children’s Choir participated in the Salzburg Choir Festival in Austria
where the choir was very popular. During this tour the choir also performed for
the Ambassador and Governor of Austria.
In 2007 the choir
was invited to the Mad-about-Waddesdon Festival in England. The choir took the
opportunity and performed in England,
Netherland and at the Rothschild Foundation in Paris, France.
Stern
Bezuidenhout once again became the conductor of the choir in 2011 and he plans
a big tour in 2012 as the choir will be existing
for 20 years.
