BRIGHTON YOUTH ORCHESTRA

Festival Hall



is one of the oldest youth orchestras in Europe having been founded in May 1949 and is made up of school aged players from the area around the City of Brighton & Hove and is the Flagship Orchestra for Brighton & Hove Music and Arts. The orchestra performs major symphonic repertoire, some of which has been commissioned for the BYO Including ‘Exstasis’ by Sir John Tavener's ‘Sewing Schools’ by Howard Goodall and ‘Midnight Skaters’ by Peter Copley. BYO is also known for its innovative approach to programming and has collaborated with choirs, contemporary and African dancers, actors, ethic instruments from Chinese Dizi to didgeridoo, artists and graffiti artists.

BYO has only had four Directors of Music in its history and Andrew Sherwood took over in 1994. Guest conductors have included Sir Adrian Boult, Sir Michael Tippett, Jonathan del Mar, and others. Soloists have ranged in the past from Dame Joan Sutherland and Dennis Lee to more recent soloists including Nicola Benedetti, Dame Evelyn Glennie, Sir John Tomlinson, Richard Durrant, Joanna McGregor and Laura van der Heijden. The orchestra has toured in most of Europe from Aberdeen to Budapest, Canada, USA, Hong Kong and Macau.

BRIGHTON & HOVE YOUTH BIG BAND


is a multifaceted ensemble made up of talented young musicians from the city on the south coast of England. The band performs a wide range of jazz classics, funk and soul by the likes of Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Charlie Mingus as well as popular arrangements by Michael Buble, Mark Ronson and their own in-house arranger Owen Eastwood. Having performed locally at Brighton Dome, The Old Market-Hove and The Brighton Centre, nationally at the Music for Youth National Festival in Birmingham and even further afield at the world famous Montreux Jazz Festival on numerous occasions, Brighton & Hove Youth Big Band never fail to step up and produce a world-class performance on stage!
